Georgia Under State of Emergency: What You Need to Know and How to Stay Safe
Georgia's summer storm season is underway, with Tropical Storm Debby having made landfall in Florida yesterday. Residents of Georgia can expect continued high winds and heavy rains throughout the week. While excessive power outages are not anticipated in the Atlanta metro area, over 300,000 people in Florida are currently without power, as reported by PowerOutage.us.
According to the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency, “Governor Brian Kemp has declared a State of Emergency for all 159 counties in Georgia in response to Tropical Storm Debby.”
This July was one of Atlanta’s wettest ever on record, with 12.7 inches of rain, and August appears to be following a similar pattern. With Tropical Storm Debby making a significant impact, it's crucial to prepare for the heavy rainfall and potential damage that often accompany such storms. Although Debby is not classified as a hurricane, tropical storms of this magnitude can bring prolonged periods of rain, which may lead to severe flooding and water damage.
It's important to remember that even a single day of intense rain can result in dangerous flooding. Be vigilant and prepared for possible water damage emergencies. In the event of flooding, avoid driving or walking through standing water and do not drive around barricades. Keep a safe distance from downed power lines to prevent electric shock or electrocution. If a tornado warning is issued, seek shelter in a storm cellar or basement if available. If not, find a small, windowless interior room or hallway on the lowest floor of your building for the best protection.
